Got our costumes finished today for the Halloween 10K. Not everyone runs in costume, but a lot of people do and we wanted to come up with something that would be fun and also mean something.

We’ve been talking about it off and on for a while now, but it was my wife that came up with the idea that we ended up going with. One day, just out of nowhere, she said, “Why don’t we go as opposite sides of the same coin?” I immediately loved it, because that was the phrase that my friend Adam had used months ago to describe us

We were separated and Ceecee and I had gone to art walk with Adam joining as kind of a third wheel. When I talked to him on the phone soon after and asked him if he was confused about why Ceecee and I weren’t together, he had said, “You guys are one. You’re opposite sides of the same coin.” I had told Ceecee that he had said that, but of course, we weren’t together then, so she didn’t respond and I was very pleasantly surprised to realize now that she still remembered that and still thinks about it.

This is really what the restoration tour is all about. Revisiting the same literal, physical places where things happened while we were breaking apart, and also revisiting those memories, those words that were spoken, those actions that were done that hurt each other and that we would never do now that we are in love again.

So how are we going as opposite sides of the same coin, you may wonder?, We are wearing tight black running pants or shorts with long-sleeved black shirts. We made signs that go on our backs with black on white for one and white on black for the other that say “Opposite sides of” and “the same coin.” Then we used a projector at school to trace and draw the front and back of a Missouri quarter onto cardboard cut-outs painted silver.

One of my wife’s best friends is in town today and they are spending some time together. Last night was totally unexpected and really funny and amazing.

A guy who teaches in the school where we work is in an 80’s cover band and they were playing at an outdoor party outside the Bistro Market, our downtown grocery store. We thought we’d go check it out when I got home from Macy’s, so we walked down there about 10:00.

There was a big tent set up out in the parking lot, and we could hear the band, but couldn’t tell where they were. We saw two guys taking stuff into the tent, so I went up and asked them if we could go through there to get to where the band was. They said to go ahead, so we did.

Inside the tent, there were all kinds of tables of food and drinks. We went on through and they had a stage and a dance floor set up outside on the other side of the tent. We watched the band for a little bit and kept seeing people going in and out of the tent and carrying drinks and plates of food, so I went to check it out.

I went up to a counter where a guy was making all kinds of drinks and asked him what was going on. He said to help myself to whatever I wanted, so I took a drink for me and one for Ceecee, along with some finger foods. A little while later, I went to go back in and a guy at the door stopped me and asked me if I had a lanyard. I didn’t know what he was talking about and he told me the tent was VIP’s only.

I went back and told Ceecee that apparently I wasn’t supposed to have gone in there before. The band took a break and we went over to talk to our friend and we told him what had happened. He said, “Do you need a lanyard? Take mine,” and just handed his to me. When they started playing again, I went back in the tent with the lanyard and got a plateful of food and two glasses of wine.

I’ve never been one to dance, and Ceecee and I have never danced anywhere in our entire marriage, even though I know she used to go clubbing when she was younger. Somehow, she got me out on the dance floor, though. She was amazing, how she moved out there, even after so many years. I felt a little awkward, but just went with it and did the best I could. We ended up staying and dancing until around 1 AM.

The next morning, I walked to the bistro to get something and saw that there was a sign left over from last night that said there was a $10 cover charge for people who didn’t have VIP passes. So we had just walked in for free and ended up with a VIP pass (in someone else’s name) and didn’t pay a thing for the whole night. We hadn’t intended to crash the party, but that was exactly what we did!

Victory is ours! We’ve been riding our bikes to work and back a few times a week (17 miles one way), and there are a lot of hills in between Springfield (where we live) and Ozark (where we work). It’s tougher coming home, plus we’re tired from work, and there’s this one hill that we always have to get off and walk at least part way up.

It’s really long and steep until you hit a little shoulder and then there’s an even steeper part to the top. Ceecee calls it The Beast. I call it Ridgecrest because that’s what the street sign at the very top says. The shoulder is the farthest we’ve ever made it until today. Today, we weren’t feeling particularly energetic, so I wasn’t expecting anything different.

When we got to about the place where we usually fail, Ceecee didn’t make any move to dismount from her bike. She was going really slow and I was right behind her, so I just kept going too. We were past the shoulder and all of a sudden, I realized we were going to make it!

It was a pretty awesome feeling. It’s always a little embarrassing to have to walk it up even though it’s a killer hill. In fact, the name of the area is Fremont Hills and a lot of cyclists train there just because it is so tough. Now that we’ve done it once and know that we can, I don’t think we’ll ever walk it again!

Took Ceecee shopping today and she really surprised me. She bought this really cute bikini and wrote on Facebook, “Yes, I bought a bikini and yes, I’m going to wear it.” She’s usually very self-conscious about bathing suits and wears things to cover herself up, even at the pool.

I’m glad she did. It looked really good and it makes me feel good to think that she is feeling more confident in herself because of the way I treat her. I don’t know if that’s why or not, but it’s nice to see. She plans on bringing it to St. Louis and the hotel we’re staying at has a pool.

We booked our room for Chicago today. It’s a place we love to go ever since we found out they have a Christkindl market there over the holidays. My wife grew up in Germany (yes, her Dad was in the army) and had always told me that her favorite memory was of an outdoor Christmas market that they would go to where there was food, ornaments, and the like. She has always said how much she wants to take me to Germany some time so I can see it.

Back in the early 2000’s, she found out that they bring a market to downtown Chicago from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. We went in 2003 for the first time and I’ll never forget the look on her face when we first walked up. She said the sights and smells were just like she remembered. I took a picture of her that I had made into an 8×10 and it’s still my favorite picture of her to this day.

Since then, we’ve gone several times, usually over Thanksgiving break from school. Once, we went to the Thanksgiving Day parade and we’re going to do that again this year. We’ll be staying right off Michigan avenue, just a block from the start of the parade route.

My wife has always been interested in theater and musicals and such. I really haven’t been, but I want to support the things she likes, and one of the things about moving downtown is that there are several theaters right near our loft. They have been playing Cats at one of them and Ceecee really wanted to go. I decided to take her, but I procrastinated buying the tickets until today. There was only standing room left, which sucked, but it was either that or miss it, so I bought them.

On the way there, she stopped me on the sidewalk, kissed me, and said, “Let’s make a pact that we will never intentionally hurt each other again.” It was an amazing moment.

I thought Cats was pretty good, but Ceecee absolutely loved it. At one point, I looked over at her while she was watching and her face was absolutely shining. It made me so glad I had taken her and also makes me want to do more of this in the future if it makes her this happy.

Today, we rode our bikes to work and on the way home, we could see a storm approaching right where we were heading. We raced it, and right as we were reaching downtown, it hit.

I almost got blown over by a powerful wind gust and we were still trying to get to the loft when the rain started. We were right on the corner where our favorite cupcake place is, so we went for it and dashed inside. After the storm, we went home and Ceecee made Italian wedding soup!

The emotional whirlwind continues. So many highs and lows right now and I’m not sure how much of it is my doing, how much is the nature of us trying to adjust to our new reality, and how much is just circumstances. About an hour before my shift was to end last night, Ceecee called me and asked me if I wanted her to get me a headlight for my bike. Just like that. No discussion about earlier in the day, just the question about the bike.

I figured if she was asking, it must mean that she still wanted to go on the Moonlight Ride, she wants there to be peace between us, and she doesn’t want to talk about it. Fine with me, so I just told her yes, that would be great. She said to hurry home after work and she would have our things ready for the ride.

We went and it was really a lot of fun. Since we hadn’t gotten to do the Tour De Cox the day the restoration tour started, I didn’t want this to be something we had to cancel also because of problems and stress in our relationship. It turned out great, though, but that’s only the beginning…

This morning, we went to the gym and Ceecee said that today she was going to try for her goal of swimming two miles. I can’t swim nearly that long, so I said I would start out in the pool with her, but then I would need to go do other things while she continued.

I stayed in the water for about 30 minutes, then asked her about how long she thought it would be. She said two hours total, so I headed off to work in another part of the gym. About an hour later, I was running laps on the upstairs running track, and it has three windows that overlook the pool. Each time I came by, I would look down and see if she was still swimming.

At first she was going steady and strong, but after a while, I could see that she was faltering and I figured she must be exhausted. I went down to the pool and squatted down at the end of her lane. When she made her next turn, she gave me a signal with her hand of five more laps, so I decided to stay until she finished.

Each time, I could see her struggling more and more, so I started saying encouraging things when she approached. She just kept holding up the number of fingers for the laps she had left. Finally, she made it. When she got out of the pool, I felt awkward being in my clothes, but she hugged me and thanked me for encouraging her. She said on Facebook that she couldn’t have done it without me. It was also the first time since we had been back together that she had shown affection toward me at the gym.

So that would have made it a really joyful day right there, but then we went to church. The week before had been a disaster, so I suggested we try somewhere else this week, if she was willing. She said she felt like we should go back to North Point and give it another try. I was pretty surprised, but off to North Point we went.

This time it was completely different. Everything I had hoped for last week happened today, and so much more. It was like everything from the songs to the message were set up specifically for her (and me) to be there! By the second or third song, she started to break, and I could see tears beginning to roll down her cheeks.

I went out to the lobby and got her some tissues, and it was good that I did, because as the message went on, it turned into this amazingly emotional bawl fest for both of us. I’m sure people around us must have been wondering what was wrong with us, but we didn’t care. We were having a healing moment with God and each other. She came back to her faith today and I can’t even begin to tell you how full my heart is and how much I love her.

(I’ve never done this before, but I edited this day’s entry due to the fact that it was so personal and included more than should be shared. Please understand that I only want to inspire others and help them find true love, not to air details that don’t need to be shared.)

Amazing! What a day! Wow, I can’t believe it. Ceecee made lunch for us at the loft and made her turkish martinis (which I thought tasted disgusting, but I didn’t really let on because she was having fun using her new stuff and experimenting). Then we went upstairs and I started to rub her back. She took my hand and moved it and I didn’t need any more help to understand the signal.

We ended up making love for the first time in about 3 months. We didn’t talk about what was going on and I wasn’t about to break the spell. The part that was hilarious was that I was supposed to go to Columbia to cover a story for a local publication. We did talk about that and it became kind of a joke that I should be on the road and if I don’t go soon, I’ll miss the story and I’m ok with that even though this editor will never hire me again.

I did finally go and had to drive like a maniac to get in on the very end of the event, but I got what I needed to be able to write the story. Ceecee wrote on her Facebook that it was a great day off, but of course, she didn’t say anything about me or what we did.

What a good day today. We have a cheap movie theater here called The Palace where they have movies that have already been in the main theater, but haven’t gone to DVD yet. They are usually $3, but on Tuesdays, they have “time warp Tuesdays” and all the movies are only one dollar.

My wife loves pancakes and IHOP had this deal where you can join their email list and get a coupon for a free meal, so we had an ultra cheap pancakes and a movie date today. We went to see Shutter Island at The Palace, then went to IHOP to eat. It all cost less than twenty dollars and Ceecee really seemed like she had fun. She’s a kid at heart and going out for pancakes isn’t lame at all for her.

Thursday she has an interview at Dillard’s for a second job. I found the classified ad for it while we were at the library and she applied on kind of a whim. They called her and now she’s going to have a shot at it.
